Cleaning concrete, paving, natural stone pavers.
Driveway and patio cleaner tips
This page is for removing stains and dirt of your patio, path
or driveway.
For basic stains like general dirt and
moss you can try pressure washing your surface. Pressure washing
concrete surfaces too often can be harmful so don't over do it.
If you are regularly getting stains then try applying a driveway
sealer after pressure washing. Natural stone is fine to be power
washed but the pointing/grout will eventually wash out.
For concrete
stains from the joints/pointing or paint spills, try a wire
brush before applying a strong acid based product. There are plenty of patio cleaners available from hardware
stores, home improvement centres and even online. Pick the one which best suits your stain and surface. If unsure
try a small amount on an area not used often first. Be sure to dilute these stronger products as directed or they
may erode your concrete.
You can also consider the ever growing range of
green concrete cleaning products. They aren't as strong as the acid based chemicals but are ideal to remove moss and general
dirt. They are less likely to harm plants too, these green products are sold in garden centres and home improvement
shops. They are more friendly to plants and the environment.
For oil stains there are products available but none we have found
work brilliantly. Some people have had success with bleach, cola and baking soda. Try soaking up excess oil
first with a paper towel and if your car has a leak you can lay a piece of ply wood under it on your driveway
or in your garage. This doesn't look great but it can be easier than fixing the leak on the car sometimes. If
you are buying a second hand car always check for oil leaks.
