Landscape Lighting and other Patio Design
Ideas to make your garden beautiful
One way to really get the
best out of your garden design is with the use of landscape
lighting. Carefully placed outdoor lamps or spot lights are a
great driveway or patio design idea. They make a great first
impression when entering a property, and can be used to enhance
your better plants.
Landscape
lighting comes in various
forms.
usually they are wired with indoor switches. There are
also solar garden lights which
automatically come on at night and have no electricity
costs. You may have seen solar garden lights as small
lamps which easily slot into soil. They are cheap and
have a pleasant glow when night falls. They charge during
the daytime sunlight. There are some new excellent solar
powered options which give great value for money as well
as being kind to the environment. They have more advanced
power storage batteries which allow maximum
usage.
Most people
will use landscape lighting that is electrically powered. They
can make a massive
difference to a property. There is a wide range available
from traditional lamp posts to ground level spot lights.
They can also be combined with a home security system so
that they automatically turn on when an intruder or guest
enters the property.
If you have
landscaping software on your computer, it is easy to choose
places to position your new landscape lighting. However the
real test will be trying the positioning out at night. This is
why it is advisable to fit garden lighting yourself. Or at
least let your landscaping contractor leave the loose lights
with you overnight. Once fitted they will stay that way so it
is worth taking the time to ensure they are in the perfect
positions. If you are use them or some of them as security
lighting too, be sure to test the range of the sensors. Garden
security lights that come on too often or not enough will
frustrate you forever.
Patio
Design Ideas:
Landscape
lighting can transform a patio and give it a whole new lease of
life by making it useable at night. Again if you have
landscaping software, it is worth playing around with some
ideas. If you want to take things further with your patio
design ideas, you could buy the fire lanterns or use powerful
torches at night to decide on the perfect positioning of your
garden lighting.
One thing to avoid is
lights that shine into people's eyes. This is great for
security lights which is why many people separate the
two. However it can be off putting to drivers, and
uncomfortable for those wanting to relax on a patio.
Ground spot lights or lamps without too much glare are
good ideas. On a patio a row of small lights makes a
great outline, or for those with a nice garden, try a
central lamp with strategically placed random lights
through the garden. Focusing on simple leafy plants like
palm trees gives a fantastic ambiance.
Solar garden lights make a nice outline for
flower beds but the cheaper versions you will recognize
from home improvement stores give off little light. It is
worth investing in quality from the start for the best
effect, and longevity. As will all garden design, the key
is to keep everything in harmony. The aim with landscape
lighting is to either make the garden look good from
inside, or make it useable at night. Decide which option
you want before installation as there is no need to have
ambient lighting just around a patio area when you won't
use it much. If you want a nice look from inside or from
the street, larger lights that are more spread out will
be more suitable.
Landscape contractors will usually be able
to help you, but there is a very wide range of options
available so it is best to do your own research too. For
garden design or patio design ideas, you can browse local
garden centers or play around with landscaping software.
Once you have some ideas, show them to your landscape
contractor and they will be able to offer further advice
on whether your ideas are practical.
